Ayurveda, the ancient science of life, is based on the knowledge and use of medicinal plants. From the Vedic period to the classical Ayurvedic texts such as the Caraka Saṃhitā and Suśruta Saṃhitā, herbs (Auṣadhi) have been recognized as the foundation of natural healing and preventive healthcare.
In Ayurveda, medicinal plants are understood not only by their physical form but by their intrinsic qualities—rasa (taste), guṇa (properties), vīrya (potency), vipāka (post-digestive effect), and prabhāva (specific action). When used appropriately, these herbs help maintain balance among the body’s functional energies (doṣas), support digestion, and promote overall vitality
Classical Ayurvedic literature states that every element of nature has medicinal potential:
नास्ति मूलमनौषधं न किञ्चिदपि भेषजम्।
अर्थे योगं तु यो वेत्ति स वैद्यः स च पण्डितः ॥
— Caraka Saṃhitā
The sacred value of medicinal plants is also acknowledged in the Vedas, where herbs are honored as life-supporting agents:
या ओषधीः पूर्वा जाता देवेषु प्रथमा उता ।
तासां त्वा विश्वकर्मा नमसा विधेम॥
— Atharvaveda
Ayurvedic medicinal plants are prepared in traditional forms such as herbal decoctions (kaṣāya), powders (cūrṇa), medicated oils (taila), ghees (ghṛta), and fermented formulations (āsava–ariṣṭa). These preparations are intended both for maintaining health and for managing illness, in accordance with the Ayurvedic principle:
स्वस्थस्य स्वास्थ्यरक्षणं आतुरस्य विकारप्रशमनम्।
Ayurvedic & medicinal plants continue to offer a natural and time-tested approach to wellness, supporting physical health, mental balance, and overall well-being.
